The key role of alumina powder in refractory materials

Those who have worked in refractory workshops know that this business is more picky about materials than the alchemy furnace of Taishang Laojun – the temperature must be able to withstand the roasting of 2000℃, and the acid and alkali corrosion must be able to withstand the baptism of aqua regia. If you want to say which material can be as stable as an old dog in this “hell-level” test, alumina powder is definitely the best choice. This pile of white powder looks ordinary, but it is the “hexagonal warrior” in the refractory industry. Today, let’s take a look at why it can be enshrined in the industrial furnace.

Ⅰ. “Hardcore attributes” with full talent points 139

The ability of alumina powder starts with its “three axes”. First of all, the melting point of this stuff is as high as 2050℃, which is more resistant to burning than Sun Wukong’s golden hoop. Zhang, a blast furnace master at a steel plant in Shandong, once said: “The temperature in our furnace soars to 1800℃, but the alumina bricks remain unchanged. They are more durable than the alchemy furnace of the Kitchen God!”

Chemical stability is even more unique. The sulfuric acid storage tanks of Ningbo Chemical Plant are coated with alumina coating, and even a ripple does not appear after being soaked in concentrated acid with a pH value of 1 for half a year. Quality inspector Wang boasted with a sample: “With this corrosion resistance, even Taishang Laojun would have to hand over a Chinese coin!”

The slag erosion resistance is even more outrageous. After the electrolytic cells of an aluminum industry group in Henan were replaced with alumina-based refractory materials, their service life was directly increased from 3 months to 2 years. Workshop director Li calculated with a cigarette in his mouth: “The maintenance cost saved is enough to replace a set of central air conditioners for the entire factory!”

II. The “Master of Form” with 72 transformations 267

When alumina powder plays “Metamorphosis”, even Monkey King has to call him Master. Nano-alumina powder, a black technology, can make the strength of refractory materials harder than reinforced concrete. Data from a laboratory in Shenzhen show that adding 5% nano-alumina can double the toughness of the material and reduce the sintering temperature by 200℃. Researcher Xiao Liu pushed up his glasses and said: “It’s like injecting super serum into the material!”

Active alumina is even more frequently used. A refractory factory in Jiangsu uses it to mix castables, and the fluidity is as good as milk tea. Not to mention the water amount is cut by 30%, the density of the finished product is close to a black hole. Master Lao Zhao boasted with an electron microscope photo: “This structure is so dense that even ants will get lost if they get in!”

The combination of micro-powders of different particle sizes is even more mysterious. A research institute in Changchun found that the thermal shock resistance is directly improved by mixing 1μm and 5μm alumina powder in a “3:7” ratio. The project leader gestured and said: “It’s like building Lego. The big particles can withstand damage, the small particles can fill the gaps, and the combination is invulnerable!”

Ⅲ. “Highlight moments” at the actual combat site 4910

In the iron and steel metallurgical circle, alumina powder is a “furnace protection artifact”. After the blast furnace outlet ditch of a steel plant in Hebei Province was relined with alumina-based castables, its service life soared from 200 furnaces to 800 furnaces. Lao Zhou, a furnace worker, patted the furnace wall and laughed: “Now this furnace is more durable than my pressure cooker!”

The petrochemical industry has reached a new height. After the catalytic cracking unit of a refinery in Qingdao was replaced with alumina wear-resistant lining, the maintenance cycle was extended from 3 months to 1 year. Equipment manager Lao Ma complained with a welding gun: “Now I am too idle to clean the equipment every day, and my bonus is almost wiped out!”

Ⅳ. “Arms race” of technology upgrade 2610

Now playing with alumina powder, the emphasis is on “nano-level control”. A laboratory in Beijing has developed an “atomic dispersion” technology, which makes the activity of alumina powder more active than that of a young person. The sintering temperature is reduced to 300℃, and the energy consumption is directly cut in half. Researcher Lao Wang boasted: “Now firing the kiln is like baking bread, and the temperature control is more accurate than my oven!”

The way to play with composite materials is more exciting. A company in Xi’an blends alumina powder with silicon carbide to produce refractory bricks that are both resistant to thermal shock and erosion. Master Lao Zhou shook his head while touching the new workpiece: “The current technology has taken away all the work of Lu Ban!”

From the alchemy furnace of Taishang Laojun to the melting furnace of modern industry, alumina powder has proved with strength: your uncle is always your uncle! This pile of white powder has poked a hole in the performance ceiling of refractory materials. The masters in the industry all say that without alumina powder, refractory materials will have to regress 30 years. If this trend continues, even barbecue stoves may have to use aerospace-grade refractory coatings one day – after all, who doesn’t want their own barbecue stove to be on the same level as a steel plant blast furnace?
